Nobody grows up dreaming about hot mix. I did anyway, and I still get a kick out of it.
I run our asphalt paving company here in New Orleans, and we work drives and lots from the city out to Chalmette, Harahan, Gretna, Belle Chasse and across the lake to Slidell.
I like the work, and I am good at it. Watching a rough drive go flat and black in an afternoon never gets old.
You know the one you have now. Faded gray, patched twice, a low corner that holds water for two days after a rain and a crack wide enough to lose a flip flop in. It comes back as one dark, quiet sheet, and you can hear the difference when you pull in.
My favorite minute of the day is the first pass with the roller, when the surface tightens up and half the block finds a reason to walk past and look.
The smallest thing we take is a single patch or a short residential drive. The largest is a whole apartment or church lot torn out and rebuilt. In between we do new drives, overlays, base repair, patching, crack filling, striping and speed bumps.
We are rarely the low bid, and the reason is buried under the pavement. Where the ground is soft we dig it out and rebuild it instead of laying hot mix over mush and hoping. What I will not do is feather a thin edge onto bare dirt, because the first truck tire that clips it peels the whole lip away.
Size, truck access, how deep we go and how bad it has gotten all move what the job costs, so I look before I say anything.
